What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

There are mainly two kinds: gTLD and ccTLD.

 

gTLD - Generic Top-Level Domain

Generic top-level domains are under Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) approval. There are seven types of gTLD worldwide: .com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org. Some of the most common top-level domains include .com, .org and .net.

 

ccTLD - Country Code Top-Level Domain

Top-level domains that are generally used or reserved for a country, state, etc. There are 250 types of ccTLD worldwide, such as .uk, .de, .tw, etc.
